News from July 2010

In early July we spent a fantastic day down at the Port Lympne Animal Park in Kent.

www.aspinallfoundation.org

It is part of the John Aspinall foundation. They concentrate on protecting rare, endangered, species and run breeding programmes, with the intention of returning these animals to their natural habitat.

Our visit was planned to see the Scottish Wildcats, of which there are very few left in the wild and we wanted to see what they were like close up and how similar they are to the Norwegian Forest cat.  They are in fact smaller and lighter, with short, dense hair, brown tabby in colour, but with specific markings. However, we observed many characteristics similar to our own cats’ temperaments and behaviours and they are not so far away from our indulged felines!!

Scottish Wildcats - Sid and Skye - live in a quiet and very secluded part of this vast park and probably have few visitors, which may suit them well as they tend to be shy of people.  However, we arrived at feeding time and they obliged by coming out and allowed us to observe and take lots of photographs of them.  They have a spacious, natural enclosure with a huge expanse of raised enclosed walkways, so they can roam up in the tree tops and watch the world below them.

Our thanks go to their Keeper Richard and his colleague who spent a great deal of time talking to us and telling us all about this fascinating breed of cat and the work they are doing in conjunction with the Scottish Wildcat Association.

The park is well worth a visit if you are ever in the Kent area. The animals are well cared for and every effort is made to make their captivity as comfortable and relaxed as possible.
